The lodging inspections take place once a year and consist of an unannounced inspection and one overnight visit. The AAA inspectors review as well as rate properties in relation to the following criteria: ambiance and amenities, bathrooms, grounds and public areas, guest rooms, housekeeping and maintenance, room décor, management, staff, & guest services.
After the inspections, properties that meet all the requirements are rated between one to five diamonds. "The AAA Four Diamond status represents a profound effort and extraordinary accomplishment by a hotel," said Charles Smith. Currently, less than three percent of an estimated 25,000 AAA rated lodgings attain the Four Diamond status.
